CHAPTER TWELVE

Dinner was to be an informal meal at the Loco Moco Café. They weren't going to have karaoke, and there were no other activities around the event. I knew some people had planned to skip it.

I usually don't go to these informal dinners. We usually set them up simply to give people a place to gather after a day of group activities.

But tonight, I was hoping to learn more about the murder. I went to dinner with the group and used my employee discount rather than putting the meal on the bridal account.

Dorothy had made a reservation for several tables on the outside deck of the restaurant.

We had Carrie as our server, and she was as efficient and friendly as always. I liked her a little better than Vivian, who always seemed to be having extended conversations with the people at other tables.

Of course, either one was better than Anna and Sybil, two college-aged servers who sometimes worked during busy hours. With those two, it was always a roll of the dice on how the meal was going to turn out.

The wedding party was in a good mood, with Claire gushing to Patrick about zip-lining. Bobby and Grandma Giggy also spent most of the dinner telling excited stories about flying down a line upside down or backward.

When Shelby got up to go to the bathroom, I went with her. As we walked back to the group, I told her I was still piecing together what had happened with Marty and asked if I could talk with her about it.

"Sure," she said as we stopped beside the door that led out to the deck. "What would you like to know?"

"At the Aloha Reception on Sunday night, Marty and Ethan were about to get into a fight, and you helped break it up," I said. "I never got a chance to thank you for doing that. It could have led to someone getting hurt."

"Oh, it was no problem," Shelby said. "It was nice to see Marty again after all this time."

"You both went to The Lava Pot when you left the Rainbow Lounge?"

"That's right," she said with a sweet smile. "We hung out there for about half an hour, and we each had one of their lava flow drinks. We then went for a walk on the beach."

"What happened after that?"

"Well, um, he said he was tired from the plane ride and was beat. He took off for his room. I was still on Chicago time, so I went up to my room and crashed."

"You didn't spend time with Marty after you walked with him on the beach?" I asked, perhaps with a slight touch of disbelief in my voice. "You didn't go to one of the bars or head over to his room or anything?"

"Um, no," she said as her cheeks flushed bright pink. She gave me a little half laugh and a guilty grimace. "Like I said, I was tired and went up to my room and fell asleep."

I didn't think she was telling me everything.
